Cowgirls hoops schedule released

By Wyoming Sports.org

Seven teams that competed in post-season play will be featured on the 2008-09 Wyoming Cowgirl basketball schedule, which was announced Monday.

Montana, New Mexico and Utah all competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while Boise State, Idaho State, Gonzaga and TCU were participants in the WNIT.

The Cowgirls will open the regular season on the road against the Denver Pioneers on Nov. 14, and then have a tough match-up against the Montana Lady Griz on Nov. 16, in Missoula. Their first home stand will open up on Nov. 20 against North Dakota, followed by Gonzaga on Nov. 23, and Boise State on Nov. 25.

Wyoming heads back out on the road for a three-game stretch beginning with a tough match-up against the University of Oregon on Nov. 29 in Eugene and Weber State Dec. 4 and Idaho State on Dec. 6, which will be played in Ogden, Utah and Pocatello, Idaho respectively. The Cowgirls will close out play before the Christmas break at the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming Shootout on Dec. 13 in Casper against North Dakota Srare and against the Saint Louis Billikens on Dec. 20 in Laramie and another rematch with Gonzaga on Dec. 22 in Spokane.

Wyoming will finish out the non-conference schedule with two final games at home before the MWC begins with Adams State College on Dec. 30, followed by the San Francisco Dons on Jan. 3.
“The 2008-09 basketball schedule will be a tremendous challenge for this team,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “The pre-season schedule will be difficult with early road trips against Montana, Oregon and Gonzaga, three teams that compete for championships in their respective conferences. The Mountain West Conference continues to be one of the top leagues in the country. With the loss of four senior starters, it is now time for other players to step up and keep us competitive within the league. I am excited about having 17 home games. It will give our fans a great opportunity to embrace a new-look Cowgirl team.”

Mountain West Conference women’s games will be played primarily on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with two Sunday games added to the schedule. Wyoming will begin MWC play at home on Jan. 7 against the Utah Utes in a televised game on The Mtn. Sports Network. Their first road conference game will be played Jan. 14 against San Diego State. Other MWC televised games for the Cowgirls will be Jan. 17 againstUNLV, against Utah on Feb.8 and with San Diego State on Feb. 15. The UNLV and San Diego State games will be featured on The Mtn. in Laramie, while the Utah game is set to be played in Salt Lake City on CBS College Sports.
Legerski enters his sixth season with the Cowgirl basketball program. He returns just one starter and nine letterwinners from a team that went 24-7 overall and earned their first ever NCAA Tournament bid a year ago.
